Katie West Howell, aka OUR LADY KATIE, stepped from this side of heaven into eternity with Jesus on November 22, 2018. She was preceded in death by her very patient husband of over 50 years, Crawford A. Howell, and her parents, William David West and Maude Bradley West. She was the youngest in her family and the last one standing as Gene, Maybelle, Lottie Mae and Alec have passed through the gates. She is also having a great reunion with her special sister - in-law, Mary HowellWhitehurst, and we imagine Saint Peter breaking the news that they have not been asked to join the Heavenly Choir.
She leaves behind to forever pass on Katie stories, her four sometimes "beloved" children, Rick A. Howell, Karen H. Morton (Keith), Charles L. Howell (Beth) and Candee H. Brakefield (David), along with her "rock star" grandchildren, Summer M. Hall (Roger), Brent A. Howell (Emily), Andy H. Morton (Heather), C. Daniel Howell, Crawford J. Brakefield (McRea), Hallie H. Cisson (Zack), Alexander W. Brakefield, J.C. Taylor Howell and six great grandchildren, Andrew, Irie, Crawford, Hollis, Lincoln and Finn, and one more bundle of joy expected in June.
Katie loved to travel, and Rhode Island was the only state she never got a chance to visit. In her last months, thanks to dementia, she time-traveled extensively, and this seemed to bring her much joy, as she had grandiose adventures that most people just dream about, but she could describe in great detail. It made us sad we could not be her travel buddies.
She and our dad owned Superior Cleaners in Rock Hill during the early 1960's, before Trade Street was all but demolished, and she worked as a supervisor at the Industrial and at Dave Behr Hosiery.
We also must include a disclaimer that mom was not actually a doctor. She also worked at Tollison Neal Drugstore the same length of time most doctors attend medical school and somehow it seemed as if she earned a degree.
Mom was a charter member of Sylvia Circle Baptist Church and in her later years, worshiped at Northside Baptist Church.
The Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held Monday, November 26th at 11:00 am at Adnah Methodist Church Cemetery. Dr. Jerry Sosebee will be officiating the service. Bass- Cauthen Funeral home is serving the family.
For those of us who loved her, the world seems a little quieter, but all we have to do to conjure up her memory is to start a sentence with remember when...
