Larry Gene Garretson, beloved father, grandfather, and valued member of the community, passed away peacefully on February 28th at the age of 77. Born on May 2nd, 1946 in Bonners Ferry, ID, Larry led a remarkable life defined by loyalty, service, and dedication to his passions.
Larry’s family moved to Durango Co, where he worked on a ranch until he was old enough to join his dad and older brothers at the logging company; until graduating from Durango High School in 1963.
He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army Special Forces. His commitment to duty and valor in service earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
After his time in the military, Larry returned to Durango, CO where he ran a local tavern with his younger brother Jeff Garretson. He continued his entrepreneurial career owning and operating a variety of businesses. Even after retiring, Larry could not sit still and decided to become a school bus driver. He loved getting to know the kids; practicing their spelling test words with them or even just hearing about the latest playground game.
Larry was an accomplished golfer and PGA certified teaching professional, sharing his love and expertise for the game with countless individuals. His passion for golf was infectious, and he leaves behind a legacy of inspiration on the green.
In addition to golf, Larry was also an avid bowler. His competitive spirit and enjoyment of the sport brought him many cherished memories and friendships over the years.
Larry was a devoted family man, cherishing every moment spent with his loved ones. He is survived by his daughter Katie Herrmann, son-in-law Tyler Herrmann, and his beloved grandchildren Easton and Savannah Kate. His family was the center of his world, and he leaves behind a profound legacy of love and devotion.
Larry is preceded in death by his father, Guy Jay Garretson Jr., his mother, Billie Jean Atkins, and his older brother, George Donald Garretson. He is survived by his sister Jean Weatherwax (Allen), brothers Jeff Garretson (Sheila), and Guy Lynn Garretson (Deborah). Along with many dear nieces, nephews and other extended family.
A service to honor Larry's life and legacy will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery on April 8th at 11 am.
Larry will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, strength, and unwavering love will continue to inspire and guide us in the days ahead. May his soul rest in eternal peace on the Fairway of Heaven.
