"Legs" Edwin Wayne Helms

Fort Mill - "Legs" Edwin Wayne Helms, 70, of 2139 Fort Mill Parkway, died Wednesday, April 05, 2017, at his home.

Memorial services will be 6 p.m. Friday, at the Fort Mill Church of God. The family will receive friends 5-6 p.m. Friday at the church.

Mr. Helms was born on April 12, 1946, in Rock Hill, SC and was a son of the late Herman and Beatrice Helms. He moved to Fort Mill and was raised in Fort Mill by Beatrice and Toby Surratt. He attended the Fort Mill Schools and went there until the 10th grade. He was always known as "Legs". In 1966 he was drafted into the Army and served a year in Viet Nam. He came home from the Army in 1968 and joined the Army Reserves where he served for 17 ½ years. While in the Reserves he worked on and was trained in Heavy Equipment Operations. A month after returning from Viet Nam he married Sandra Robinson and on May 25, 2016, they celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.

"Legs" attended and was a member of the Fort Mill Church of God where he worked with the Bus Ministry, Children's Ministry and decorating the classroom walls in Christian themes.

He worked for Winn Dixie for 19 years as a mechanic and 6 years driving an eighteen wheeler. He retired after experiencing some health problems. He enjoyed retirement working in his shop. He also enjoyed drawing and painting.

He was the loving husband of Sandra Robinson Helms; the proud father of two sons, Steven Wayne and James Allen Helms; a proud grandfather of Sidney, Brandon and Ashley Helms, Billy Lee Rollins and Charles and Katherina Cook; proud great-grandfather of Jeremiah Roman Lee Helms; two brothers, Ronnie and Heyward Helms and a sister, Renee Lane.

Memorial donations may be made to the Fort Mill Church of God, 221 Academy Street, Fort Mill, SC 29715.
