Lena Broadwell Hopkins, 93, of Rock Hill, SC peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday February 23, 2025. Lena was reunited with her husband, Joe Warren Hopkins, of 70 years after a life filled with joy, family, faith and service. Joe preceded Lena in death on March 15, 2021. Following Joe’s retirement in 1991, he and Lena left Dallas, TX and moved back to Rock Hill and built their dream home on their family’s farm land. They were reconnected with family and friends and immediately found their church home at First Presbyterian of Rock Hill.
Lena and Joe were the parents of four children, the late Dennis Hopkins (Lisa) of Rock Hill, SC, Kenneth Hopkins (Julia) of Katy, TX, David Hopkins (Cathy) of Montgomery, TX and LuAnne Hawkins (William) of York, SC. Dennis passed away a week after Joe in 2021 after fighting ALS for a number of years. Lena is survived by nine grandchildren; Kyrsten Magnuson (Greg), Dane Hopkins, Tyler Hopkins (Amina), Nicole Hopkins, Blake Hopkins (Stephanie), Grant Hopkins (Rebecca), Alexandria Coffman (Nathan), Rebecca Smith (William) and Dillon Luse. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren; Sophia, Adalynn, Ellison, Emma, Jackson, Madeline, Penelope and Genevieve.
Lena dedicated her life to raising her children, serving the community through numerous organizations with the church, and spreading her love and warmth to everyone she met with a contagious smile. She was born in Abbeville, SC and was preceded in death by her parents William and Ethel Broadwell, sisters Edith and Myrtle and brothers William, Clyde, Wayne and George. Lena was a lover of sports playing on her high school basketball team, then playing tennis in her adult years. She attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill before marrying Joe. They moved several times for Joe’s career living in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Texas before retiring back to Rock Hill, SC. Lena was also a very accomplished seamstress, excellent cook and wonderful entertainer.
A private viewing will be held for the family on Wednesday, February 26th at 9:00am. A graveside service will follow at the Grandview Memorial Cemetery on South Cherry Road in Rock Hill at 11:00am. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church downtown Rock Hill at 12:00 pm followed by a reception in the Joe Hopkins Hall at First Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all of her friends who have provided support, food and most importantly loved Lena over the years, especially the later years of her life. Special thanks to her personal caregivers, Karen Barnes and Linda Brice and all of the special nurses and caregivers at ACTS Park Pointe.
