Fort Mill, SC - Leon R. Wood Jr., passed away on May 3, 2023
Born in Albany, New York, November 21, 1934.
He was the son of the late Leon R. Wood, Sr. and Nell Wood Teator.
He was a graduate of Coral Gables High School, Coral Gables, Florida. He served in the U.S. Naval Aviation during the Korean War. He was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Kentucky, during which time he became a member of Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society and Eta Kappa Nu, the National Electrical Engineering Honor Society.
He was initially employed by Sandia Laboratory on their honors program. Subsequently, he was hired by General Electric Company to work at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory where he worked until retirement. While there his accomplishments included becoming an Accredited Computer Programmer, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Engineering at Union College in Schenectady, New York, and graduating from the General Electric Financial Management Program. His work at the Knolls involved the design, analysis, and testing of the nuclear reactors in the Navy’s nuclear submarines. He is survived by three sons, Michael Wood of Leesburg, VA, Matthew Wood of Fort Mill, SC, Larry Wood of Lexington, KY, a daughter, Deborah Wood Stackhouse of Pittsburgh, PA, a sister, Ann Teator Hummel of Nassau, NY and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was living in Fort Mill SC at the time of his death.
Funeral services to be held at Fort Jackson National Military Cemetery, Columbia, SC, at a future date.
