Mrs. Marcella Blanton Johnston, 89, passed away Friday, April 8, 2011 at Piedmont Medical Center. A native of Columbia, Mrs. Johnston was a daughter of the late A. Howard and Marcella Willis Blanton. Born on December 19, 1921 she graduated from Columbia High School in 1939. She attended Hollins College and graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1943. She served as hostess for Southern Railway for two years out of Washington D.C. before marrying William "Bill" Johnston in Charlotte, NC on June 22, 1946. From there they moved to Taylorsville, NC where Mr. Johnston was employed by Alexander Railroad. In 1948 they bought the Ed Russell farm in the Bethesda Section of York County. They moved to the Newport Community in 1956 where she worked on the family farm until 1964, when she then became employed by the U.S. Census Bureau. Mrs. Johnston retired in 1982. During the 1950s she served as president of the York County Home Demonstration Clubs. She was also a lifetime member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, served on several committees, was a deacon and was given lifetime membership by the Women of the Church in 1997. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Bill Johnston, one brother and one sister. Surviving are one son Bud Johnston and his wife Carmelita of Rock Hill; one daughter Paula Hinson and her husband Phillip also of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Johnston will be held Tuesday, April 12 at 11:00am in Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Mary Katherine Robinson and Jim Richardson officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the narthex and at other times in home of Mrs. Johnston, 859 Adnah Church Rd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
