Marjorie Joan Lanning, 92, of Fort Mill, SC passed away peacefully on Monday, November 21, 2022. She was surrounded by her two sons, daughter and daughter-in law.
She was born in Englewood, New Jersey to George and Marjorie Arnold. She attended High School in Leonia NJ and attended and graduated from The NJ Teachers College where she met her husband Earl Sydney Lanning. Earl and Marjorie were married in 1953, moved to New Providence, NJ where they had 3 sons and a daughter. Marjorie was a resident of New Providence for 58 years and a 2nd Grade teacher in the Chatham School system for 35 years.
In the Mid 1970’s Marjorie became a single mother with 4 Children under 16. Despite very limited financial means she provided a loving and thriving childhood for her children. She was a model of determination, doing everything possible to provide for her family. She worked a second job around the holidays and completed a Masters Program in Education at Fairleigh Dickenson University. She loved the outdoors, animals and camping. She planned and twice camped across the country (10 weeks each). The second trip she took alone with her two younger children in 1981.
As her children moved out Marjorie rented rooms in her house to help fund her passion for travel. She traveled the globe in retirement to locations including Australia, New Zealand, and London.
Marjorie is preceded in Death by her son Robert Bruce and her sisters Judy and Kari. She is survived by her children Jim (Annette Lanning), Beth Moya, Mark (Missy Lanning), grandchildren Nicholas Lanning (April), Kelsey Myers (Greg), Kali Moya, Logan Lanning, Great Granddaughter Elena Grace Lanning, Nieces Shelly Spencer (Massoud), Melanie Ramsey (Sean) and multiple people who consider Marjorie their 2nd Mother.
A celebration of life is being planned for early 2023 at the Presbyterian Church of New Providence where Marge was an active member for more than 50 years. More information to follow.
