Ms. Martha Beckham Costner, 89, died Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, surrounded by her loving daughters and daughter-in-law. Martha was the only child of Reba Janet Vaughn Beckham and Haskell W. Beckham. She was born in Heath Springs, S.C. weighing only 3 pounds. Martha's mother tragically died within hours of giving birth to her but Martha proved to be a survivor then as well as throughout her life. Martha attended Winthrop Training School before becoming a long-time employee of McCrorey's Dime Store in downtown Rock Hill. After raising her children, Martha became the manager of Crossroads Country Store on Ebenezer Road. There, she was known to everyone who visited the store for her friendly and caring personality. Martha never met a stranger and was the epitome of a "people person." Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin Alexander Costner. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Blackwell (Ed), Yvonne Stewart (Barb Cunningham); three grandsons, Lee Blackwell, Chris Stewart and Wesley Blackwell; three great granddaughters, Mia Stewart, Marley Stewart and Aurora Blackwell; two sisters-in-law, Lucy Costner Cox and Joyce Costner Brown; brother-in-law, Ornan Costner; and numerous nieces and nephews. Although Martha was an only child who never had a mother growing up, she was blessed that her husband had a large and loving family who welcomed her as a daughter and sister when they married. She treasured each of them. In addition to her family, Martha was "adopted" by the family of Bill and Nancy Hudson of York as a 2nd mother and grandmother. The Hudsons and their 8 children, known as the Hudson Family Band, gave Martha over 21 years of joy, love and friendship. Martha's funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 2:00 at Bass Cauthen Funeral Home Chapel, with the Reverend Doug Blaikie officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Bass Cauthen Funeral Home. Interment will be at Laurelwood Cemetery. The family requests that memorials to honor Martha be made to the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Martha received tender loving care from the staff at this wonderful facility and the family is extremely grateful to each of them. The family also wishes to thank the staff at White Oak Manor York for the care they gave Martha during her final year.
