Martha Alice Abernathy Waltrip, 98, died peacefully at her home in the Village at Summerville Presbyterian Home on August 19, 2015. The youngest of eight children of William Leslie Abernathy and Martha Mary "Mattye" Williams of Ft. Lawn, SC, she is survived by her sister Helen Abernathy White of Marion, SC. A graduate of Winthrop College, Martha became a teacher, and married a teacher, Terry Duard Waltrip, a graduate of Wofford. World War II took the Waltrips to many posts and in the 1950's they moved to St. Augustine, FL, opening a bookshop on Aviles Street, The Cockle Shell, then settling into long careers with the St. Augustine schools. At retirement, they came home to South Carolina at the Village at Summerville. A consummate Southern lady - she dressed the part - and hostess, Martha entertained and was entertaining, wrote humorous poetry, was gracious to everyone, charitable and generous to those in need. A graveside service will be held at Neely's Creek ARP Church, Lesslie, SC on Saturday, August 22, at 4:00 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at the Chapel of the Presbyterian Home in Summerville the following week. Other survivors include nieces and nephews Kathleen Campbell Hamilton, Mary Abernathy Freedman, Sue Ann Williams, Leslie Lambert-Jones, Jerri White, Harry A. White, Jr., William L. Abernathy III, and the Rev. William H. Abernathy, Jr.; eleven great and fifteen great-grand nieces and nephews.
