Mavis Hobbs Wood, age 90, died peacefully at home in Fort Mill, SC on Monday, February 3, 2020.
Mavis was born on February 23, 1929 in Chester, Georgia to Charlie and Bessie Hobbs. She grew up on a farm and upon graduating high school at 16, moved to Spartanburg, SC where she met her future husband, Charles Hansel Wood. Mavis and Hansel made their home in Vienna, VA where they raised their two children, Dianne and Chuck. In addition to providing a loving home for her family, Mavis worked for a defense contractor and as the secretary for a bank president.
Mavis and Hansel retired to Myrtle Beach in 1987 where she loved bowling and was an avid golfer. She also enjoyed traveling the world, sewing, cooking and took up drawing and painting in her later years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hansel Wood. Mavis is survived by her children, Dianne Flaherty and her husband Jack, of Fort Mill, SC and Dr. Charles Hansel Wood, Jr. and his wife Virginia of Faber, VA, her two grandchildren Meredith and Garrett and great grandchildren Isabel, Aubree and Alex.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Saturday, February 8 at Palmetto Funeral Home in Fort Mill. Visitation will be held before the service at 11:00. Mavis will be interred at Hillcrest Cemetary in Conway, SC on Sunday, February 9. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Celiac Disease Foundation at celiac.org or mailed to 20350 Ventura Boulevard, Suite 240, Woodland Hills, CA 91364.
