Maybelle Coon Taylor

August 20, 1912 — August 5, 2020

Maybelle C. Taylor (107) passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. She lived a long and full life and is now reunited with her husband, Owen. She enjoyed telling people she was born the year the Titanic sank, 1912. She was born at home August 20th in Saranac Lake, NY. Later the family moved to White Plains where she would meet her husband, Owen. They had been married 49 years before his death in 1982. She was fiercely independent continuing to drive at 99 and was able to maintain her own home until 103.

Throughout her life she continued to learn and try new things. She played the piano, painted seascapes in oil, including famous clipper ships, played Bridge and loved to travel and read. Later in life she became very involved in the community as a member of the Charlotte Women’s Club, Pineville Methodist Church Golden Pines, and Shepherd’s Center. All her life she loved telling stories of her youth. At 92, she started writing her autobiography still making additions until she was 103. May loved the beach and built her own beach house on Ocean Isle Beach in 1989 moving in days before Hugo hit. One of her greatest joys was bringing friends and family to the beach. She was well known in her neighborhood, never seen without a dog by her side. She outlived 4 faithful companions thinking each one would be her last pet.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Taylor and sister, Beatrice Koch. She leaves a lasting legacy to be cherished by her survivors, daughters, Laurel Taylor-Kwittken (Herb, deceased) of Peoria, Arizona and Jill Taylor Harris (Larry) of Fort Mill, SC; Grandchildren, Kelly Harris Price (Herb) of Charlotte, NC, Casey Owen Harris of Charlotte, NC, Kenneth Wade Moorin of Peoria, Arizona; Niece, Suzanne Terry (Phil) of Sacramento, CA; Nephew, Kevin Koch of Port Chester, NY. She was lovingly known as G.G. and adored by her great-grandchildren, Taylor Roberts Price, Scott Harris Price, Brooke Nicole Harris.

Due to COVID, the family will have a private celebration of life.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all the staff at The Pearl in Fort Mill and to the hospice nurses for their compassion and supportive care.
