Melida Nelson, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away in her home on August 26, 2024, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Born on February 8, 1943, in Medellin, Colombia, Melida immigrated to the United States with her mother and 4 younger brothers in 1965. She met George Nelson in 1966. They were married in 1967 and settled in Burbank California. Their marriage was a testament to love and partnership, lasting over five decades.
Melida became an American citizen in 1976, embracing her new country while never forgetting her Colombian roots. She was also known for her work ethic and her unique skill in creating and blending hairpieces. Her artistry was sought after by several Hollywood icons, including Burt Reynolds, Don Knotts, and Ken Berry to name a few.
In 2018, Melida and George moved to Tega Cay, South Carolina, to be closer to their son Michael and their grandchildren, Ryan & Maia. The following year, Melida was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite a seemingly successful battle, the cancer later metastasized to her bones, ultimately leading to her passing. Throughout her illness, she displayed remarkable strength and resilience, inspiring all who knew her.
Melida was recently predeceased by her brother, Esteban Escobar, with whom she shared a close bond. She is survived by her devoted husband, George Nelson; her loving son, Michael Nelson; and her cherished grandchildren, Ryan Nelson and Maia Nelson. Her legacy of love, hard work, and determination will continue to live on through her family and the countless lives she touched.
Melida's family would like to thank the medical professionals at Via Health Professionals for their top notch care and support and all of her friends and neighbors who offered their support during her illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in her memory to a breast cancer research organization of your choice.
Lastly, to honor Melida's wishes, there will not be a traditional funeral. Instead there will be a mass said in her name at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church . Then a 'celebration of life' get together for her 'immediate' friends and family at her home. Exact dates and details are yet to be determined and we will notify friends and family once that has been set.
May she rest in peace.
