Michael R. Smith

Michael Rowland Smith, 87 years of Indian Land, SC. Originally of Hallowell, Maine.  Went to be with the Lord, Thursday morning April 4th, 2024.  He was born in Augusta, Maine, January 12, 1937.  The son of Fredric and Arlene Smith.  Educated in Hallowell schools.  Michael, a Vietnam Veteran, retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after twenty years of honorable service.  Obtaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer.  Following his military service, he worked for Bath Iron Works for another twenty years.  He had the honor of being the Lead Helmsman for every new US Navy ship built, when the ship went to sea for the first time for the builder's trials.  He enjoyed his family, the grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Playing cards and games with them and friends.  He is survived by his wife Jeanette of 67 years. His daughters Laura Shafer, Weddington, NC and Lisa Koras of Weathersfield, CT.  Seven Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his daughter Linda Lessard of Bakersfield, CA.
