Montez “Tez” Nix Carter, 84, passed away surrounded by loved ones on November 2, 2021. She was born on September 15, 1937 in Abbeville, SC to Clarence Newton and Lillie Francis Nix. In addition to her husband Robert Eugene Carter, Sr., she was proceeded in death by brothers Alfred Nix, Jerry Nix, and Randolph Nix. She is survived by sons Robert E. Carter, Jr. of Rock Hill and John Carter of Union, SC, daughter-in-law Jan Carter of Union, SC, grandchildren Kerr, Carter, Job Carter, and Charles Carter of Rock Hill.
After graduating from Seneca High School in Seneca, SC, she received degrees from Winthrop University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While attending Winthrop, she was the president of the Baptist Student Union. Following graduation from Winthrop, she was a missionary in Ghana. Later in life, she taught Latin at Fort Mill High School and was a Fulbright Scholar to study Chinese culture and language. In retirement, she taught Sunday School and English as a Second Language at Oakland Baptist Church.
The family will receive visitors from 5pm until 7pm on Friday November 5th at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home in Rock Hill. The funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Eddie Ramsey at Oakland Baptist Church at 3 PM on Sunday November 7th in Rock Hill. Immediately following the funeral, interment will be led by the Rev. Janey Wilson at Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill.
