With great sadness, we announce that Nestor Andrij Scherbey passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 27, 2023 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. We mourn his passing, but remember the full and interesting life that he had.
Born in Detroit, Michigan on June 20, 1950, Nestor graduated from Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic High School, and received his BA from Wayne State University. He enlisted in the US Army, where he achieved the rank of warrant officer. Thereafter, he gained his license as an international customs broker, and his distinguished professional career spanned more than four decades, fifty-five countries, and four continents.
Nestor was unique in every way. He was an adventurer, a polyglot and citizen of the world. A conversationalist, he had a special ability to connect with people. He was a voracious reader, spiritual and generous to a fault. He had a witty sense of humor, and an uncanny ability to find the positive in everything. Photography was his passion. Nestor always found the road less traveled to take his unique photos. And he whole-heartedly loved his people. His photos now grace the walls of our homes, and remind us of him every day.
Nestor was preceded in death by his parents, Wasyl and Iryna Scherbey (nee Iwashko). He leaves behind his wife Lydia, his two children Valentyna (Patrick) DeCristo and Roman Scherbey, two grandchildren Alexandra DeCristo and Victoria DeCristo, two sisters Chrystyna Nykorak and Dzvinka Hayda, and numerous family members, including siblings-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Nestor also leaves behind a legion of friends. He made friends everywhere that he went, and with Nestor, once a friend, always a friend.
As Nestor was a life-long supporter of Ukrainian causes, in lieu of a funeral, the family asks that anyone wishing to celebrate his life consider making a donation to United Help Ukraine at www.unitedhelpukraine.org.
