Norman Francis Schaefer, 82, husband of Donna Mason Schaefer for 45 blessed years, after a short illness, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, August 10th, from his home in Charlotte, NC.
Norm was born on September 16, 1935, in New Kensington, PA, the son of the late Edward Schaefer and Katherine Rhine Schaefer Buck. After graduating from Roman Catholic High School and Allentown College (B.A. Modern Languages) he served three years in the U.S. Army at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico as Scouting Coordinator for military families. He then served four years in the Army reserves.
Norm was employed by the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years. He served in many positions around the country, retiring from the National Supply Group in Charlotte, NC in 2009.
Norm was a 70 year veteran in the volunteer service of the Boy Scouts. He was honored with many awards and commendations through the years. After retiring from the professional service of the BSA he continued to serve in many capacities as a volunteer with Pack and Troop 832, the District Eagle Board, the Regional Summer Camp Assessment Team and others. Norm's passion for the USO led him to volunteer over 2,700 hours with the USO of Charlotte at the Charlotte Douglas Airport. He also served many hours with the Charlotte Area Red Cross.
Norm is survived by his wife, Donna; his son, Kevin F. Schaefer, of Fort Mill, SC; his daughter, Marsha Schaefer Pittman (Bob), and two granddaughters, Cameron Leigh Pittman and Taylor Leigh Pittman, all of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by a brother, Robert J. Buck (Barb) of Mansfield, PA, and brother-in-law, Larry Mason (Barbara) of Rustburg, VA; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Mother, Father, and Brother, Ronald Schaefer, all of Philadelphia, PA.
Norm requested that his final Good Turn be to participate in the Whole Body Donation program at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in order to help as many others as possible.
