Patricia Ann (Harkey) Smathers

Mrs. Patricia Ann Harkey Smathers, 88, of Fort Mill, SC went home to be with our Lord November 30, 2021.  Born June 20, 1933 in Charlotte, NC. She was the daughter of Harold Franklin Harkey and Georgia Pearline Martin Harkey. She was preceded in death by her loving husband David Earl Smathers, siblings; William “Bill” Franklin Harkey, Dolores Jane Harkey Nixon, and Sallie Elizabeth Harkey Eskew.  Mrs. Smathers is survived by her four devoted children, Pam Smathers Bame, Fort Mill, SC, Theresa Smathers Hurst (Doug), York, SC, David Earl Smathers II (Tania), York, SC, and Geddie Harold Smathers (Tracy), Emerald Isle, NC. She was Granmom to 5 Granddaughters; Sara Joines (Michael), Amanda Davis (Jacob), Alexandra Smathers (Jolene), Audrey Smathers, and Christina Stoner (Charles). And three Great grandchildren Corey, Finnegan, and Charlie. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Other family members Joseph Jinks (Danielle) and their children Austin, Alexis and Aubrey. She leaves this earthly family with a legacy of love, kindness, compassion, and most of all an enduring faith in Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior.

Mrs. Smathers graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1952 and in 1977 became an LPN through her Associates degree from CPCC. She retired after 26 years at the age of 72. She was a faithful member of St Andrews United Methodist Church and an active member of Methodist Women, Harvesters, Loaves and Fishes and Covenant Sunday School Class.

She traveled extensively doing mission work, using her nursing and building skills to provide comfort and care to people in other countries including Armenia, Guatemala, Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama, and Kenya. She also traveled with the Nomads working to help people who had been through natural disasters in the US. Including South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, and Florida.

The family will receive friends at St Andrews United Methodist Church, 1901 Archdale Drive, Charlotte, NC 28210 - 10:00am, Monday, December 6, 2021. The Memorial Service will follow celebrating the life of Patricia Smathers at 11:00am. Officiating will be Pastor Sherri Barnes and Pastor Shirley Canty.

Memorials can be made to Loaves and Fishes or the Helping Hands Fund at St Andrews UMC.
