Paul Cecil Rutherford, age 88, died at Unihealth Post-Acute Care Center on Friday March 11, 2011. He was born on March 31, 1922 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to the late James Relsimon and Ada Ellen (Austin) Rutherford. Paul served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corp during World War II and was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii. On January 9, 1946 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jennie Jernejcic in Morehead City, North Carolina. Paul was a member of Mount Holly United Methodist Church, where he had served faithfully as the Church Historian, Sunday School Teacher, Youth worker, Boy Scout Leader and in the Motor Vittles Program. He retired from Bowater and Duke Energy, and enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He will be remembered by many for his beautiful flower beds and his bountiful vegetable gardens which he shared with many in the community. Paul was also a wood working craftsman, making furniture and crafts. Paul is survived by his son and wife, John (Jack) Charles and Debbie Rutherford; his daughter and her husband Teresa and Fred Justice; six grandchildren Alisha (Neil) Wiater of Bend, Oregon, Aaron (Holli) Justice, Jennifer (Bobby) Shellenberger, Joy Valverde, Cindy Rutherford and Ellen Justice; and ten great-grandchildren, Lily and Miles Wiater; Levi, Malachi and Elijah Justice; Tess, Timothy and Taralyn Shellenberger; and Jacob and Elizabeth Valverde. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Elizabeth and his son Michael Paul Rutherford, who was married to Jeanne Rutherford. Memorial services for Paul Rutherford will be held at 3:00pm, Sunday March 13 at Mount Holly United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Bradley officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit with the family immediately following the service in the church's family life center and at other times at the home of Fred and Teresa Justice, 1928 Mt. Holly Drive, Rock Hill, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Motor Vittles program at Mount Holly United Methodist Church, 1926 Mt. Holly Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
