Philip Kent Smith died at home in Fort Mill on September 5, 2016. Mr. Smith was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin on June 17, 1936 and grew up in Chicago. He served in the Army before returning to Chicago where he met and married Dorothy, his wife of 54 years. Mr. Smith worked as a Senior Mechanic and Millwright for Exxon Production in Florida, retiring from the company after 21 years. His coworkers and supervisors consistently recognized his excellent work, his practical jokes and (to his great delight) his lack of diplomacy. Mr. Smith retired to Tennessee in 1996. In 2013, he moved to South Carolina, where he was a member of First Baptist Church, Fort Mill. Mr. Smith was a woodworker and an avid reader. He never missed a chance to engage in conversation or to help his neighbors. He enjoyed travel, with frequent stops for coffee, pie and cinnamon rolls (with raisins). Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, his son Glenn (Theresa), daughters Donna (Mark) and Kendra (Jerry) and grandchildren Emily, Alayna, Marinda, Graham and Caramia. Memorial donations may be made to Samaritan's Purse or to Hospice and Palliative Care, Palmetto Region. Friends may call at home on Wednesday, September 7, from 3:00 to 6:00. Burial will be private. Online condolences can be made at www.palmettofh.com. The family is being served by Palmetto Funeral Home of Fort Mill, SC.
