Ralph "Bennie" Capps Jr.

November 12, 1943 — October 20, 2014

Ralph Benjamin Capps, Jr., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 20, 2014. Born on November 12, 1943, he grew up in Laurens where he owned and operated Capps' Garage and later, Capps' Automotive. He repaired countless cars and made many of them go a lot faster at Laurens Speedway, Greenville Pickens and other tracks. Capps was a veteran of the United States Army. Noted for his marksmanship skills and his ability to repair any type of motor, he used his mechanical abilities to take care of equipment that was being shipped to and from Vietnam during his time in Okinawa, Japan. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of Lakeside Country Club and Bellview Baptist Church before he moved to Columbia-and later to Rock Hill, South Carolina, in the early 1990s. As the owner of Capps Tools and Equipment, he was a smart and compassionate businessman and a trusted advisor and friend to many mechanics and shop owners in Rock Hill, Lancaster, Chester and surrounding areas. Capps was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Brown Capps, in 1989, his parents, Ralph B. Capps, Sr., and Margaret Franks, and his beloved grandmother, Jeanette Franks. He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Capps, his son, Hunter Capps, and three cherished pets of the home. He is also survived by his daughters, Amanda Capps, of Greenville, and Mary Ann Griffin, of Williston, two stepchildren, April Dawson and Jason Dawson of Columbia, and two sisters, Clarice Kimbriel of San Marcos, Texas, and Jeannie Bryant of Honea Path, South Carolina. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 24, in the chapel at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home in Rock Hill. This will be followed by a graveside service at Bellview Baptist Church in Laurens at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center afterward. In lieu of flowers, please contact his daughter, Amanda, at AmandaCappsInk@gmail.com for pending information on his wishes for memorials.
