Robert W Mccredy

March 5, 1927 — April 23, 2018

Robert W. McCredy, 91, of Tega Cay, SC, passed away on April 23, 2018 peacefully with his
family, and his wife of 70 years, by his side. He was born in Earlville, NY on March 5, 1927, a
son of the late Merton and Lena Hollister McCredy.

"Coach", "Big Bob", "Papa", as he was affectionately known, was a three-sport athlete
throughout his high school career. He graduated from West Winfield High School and, with his
mother's permission, joined the Navy at the age of 17, serving in Okinawa during the later
stages of WWII. In 1948 he married Jeannette McLaughlin of Waterville, NY, and worked
numerous odd jobs while earning a degree in education from Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY. He
began his career in Edmeston, NY and Cherry Valley, NY, eventually moving to Otego, NY in
1955 where, in addition to teaching, he was involved in coaching basketball, baseball, football,
and men's volleyball. One summer was spent overseeing the construction of Otego's new
community pool, and for the next several summers he supervised the town's swimming and
recreation program and coached Little League. In 1961 he moved his family to Sherburne, NY
to join his brothers David and George there in the operation of McCredy Motors, from which he
retired in 1991, eventually spending his winters in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he became a
renowned shuffleboard pro. He remained involved in sports as a pitcher in the Sherburne
slo-pitch softball league for several years, and continued to enjoy golf and shuffleboard into his
eighties.

On March 5, 2018 he celebrated his 91st birthday surrounded by his family and was pleased to
read so many tributes from his former students and athletes that had been posted on Facebook.

He was predeceased by his brothers George, David, Warren, and sister, Ruth Risley. He is
survived by his wife, Jeanette of Tega Cay SC, his children, Robert Jr. (Marilyn) of Hamilton, NY, Barbara Scott (Duncan) of Lake Wylie, SC, W. Scott of Greer, SC, and Spencer (Mary Anne) of Norwich, NY; his grandchildren: Heather (Ken) Gadawski; Joseph Spencer (Jen), Ross (Erin), Samantha (Trevor), Cali, Molly, Michael McCredy; Jennifer (Fred) Jenkins; Nathan (Megan) Gehm; Rebecca (Djamel) Bekka; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Wellmore Senior Living of Tega Cay, SC and the

been entrusted to Palmetto Funeral Home, Fort Mill, SC. Services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to S-E Save Our Sports, addressed to S-E Athletic Dept. 13 School St., Sherburn, NY 13460. The
