Roland L. Wlodyka

October 15, 1938 — January 30, 2020

Roland Leonard Wlodyka, 81, of Lake Wylie, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 30, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 15, 1938 in Boston, MA, son of the late Alfred S. and Gertrude E. Horsford Wlodyka.

Roland proudly served his country in the United States Army and Air Force. At a young age he developed of passion for cars that led to a successful career in racing. He began his racing career at San Jose Motor Speedway in California, driving super-modifieds, but he is best remembered for his achievements in NASCAR racing. He was instrumental in the development of Osturland Motor Ventures. His crowning success was realized in 1979 when (as Crew Chief) the team won Rookie of the Year, and the following year in 1980, won the Championship Title.

Roland had a passion for excitement! His dry sense of humor and his appreciation for the finer things in life will keep him in the hearts of his friends and loved ones forever.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Faye Wlodkya; a son, Neil Wlodyka and wife, Amy of Charlotte; and a daughter, Cari Ann Garcia and husband, Carlos of Fort Mill. He also leaves behind a step-daughter, Dianna Kessler and husband, David of Lake Wylie; a step-son, Ken Taylor and his wife, Amanda of Riley, Kansas; and 8 grandchildren, Jack, Sam, Mary, Ryan, Natalia, Juan Carlos, Allison and Ashley.

The family will receive friends and celebrate Roland's life from 1:00 - 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 15, 2020 in the gathering space of Community Church at Lake Wylie. All friends and family are invited to attend to share stories and memories. His adventurous spirit and wit will be missed by many.

A small private service will be held at Palmetto Funeral Home and Roland will be laid to rest in a private burial service at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont, NC.
