Sarah Cash, 86, of Tega Cay, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at her home. She was born Sarah Spratt the tenth child of James and Finnie Goforth Spratt. She lived in McDowell County until she graduated from high school at Glenwood High School in 1942. She graduated from Pfeiffer Junior College in 1944 and received her A.B. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina in 1946. As a student at Chapel Hill, she wrote features for the Greensboro News and the Chapel Hill Weekly. She was a writer for the Raleigh, NC Times and the Durham NC Sun, the latter for ten years. She was married to Charles H. Cash Jr. in 1950, which was in broadcast journalism in Durham, Nashville and Atlanta. He preceded her in death in 1992. While living in Durham she was secretary of the North Carolina Press Women and received an award from the NCPW in the layout division as women's editor with the Durham Sun. She joined the Nashville, Tenn. Banner in 1957 as a reporter. She wrote advertising for the Famous-Barr store in St. Louis and later wrote advertising copy for Rich's in Atlanta after moving there in 1961. She wrote for the Atlanta Journal in the lifestyle department and later for the Sunday combined Journal and Constitution in the lifestyle department, the business section and homes and gardens section. In her last years there she wrote for the DeKalb Extra news of the Journal-Constitution. While writing for this homes and gardens section she received a horticulture award from the Men's Garden Club in Atlanta. Sarah Cash was a writer for the Atlanta Journal and Constitution for 26 years. After she retired in 1990, she continued to write for four years. After retirement she moved to Tega Cay where she continued to free lance for the York Observer (The Charlotte Observer), the travel section and homes and garden sections of the Observer, features in the Fort Mill Times and the Lake Wylie Pilot. She was a member of the Tega Cay Tennis Association and the Vintage Club. Mrs. Cash was a member of the River Hills Community Church and a member of the Fellowship Class in Sunday school. She is survived by her two sisters, Sybil Spratt of Tega Cay, SC and Geneva Spratt Craig of High Point,SC and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Mrs. Cash, will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 19, 2012 at River Hills Community Church, 104 Hamilton's Ferry Rd., Lake Wylie, SC.
