Sue Royall Horton

May 14, 1920 — August 15, 2011

Sue Royall Horton (born May 14, 1920) peacefully passed on Monday, August 15, 2011 with her beloved husband of 61 years, Rev. Thomas Walter Horton, Jr. and her children, by her side. Sue was the youngest daughter of seven children of Emily Dupre Royall and Lee Royall. She joins her siblings John Edward Royall, Emily R. Lucas, Sarah R. Hamlin, Lee Royall and her parents in going home. Surviving are her sister, Anne B. Royall and brother, Jervey D. Royall. Also surviving are her adored children Mary Scheper and husband Fred, Susan Van Zile and husband David, Thomas Horton and wife Sandy, and adored grandchildren Kathleen Potter and husband Chris, Andrew Van Zile, Joseph Brown, and Bailey Horton. Additionally, she is survived by Col. and Mrs. Victor S. Vierra and their children and grandchildren. She was also blessed by many devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends throughout her 91 years. As the youngest child of a big, close family, Sue learned toughness, tenderness and caring from her mother and father. Her family always welcomed anyone and everyone, and Sue carried those traditions into her own family. Her home was often filled with lots of people and was never without good food. Life was seldom dull or quiet at the Horton house, and Sue worked tirelessly to ensure everyone felt welcome, happy, and full. And if you couldn't make it to her dining table to share a meal, Sue made sure that her food made it to yours. Sue earned a degree in Economics from College of Charleston and was trained as a social worker. She worked for the Red Cross during World War II then worked as a caseworker for Family Service in Savannah, GA. Upon returning to Mt. Pleasant Sue dedicated many years of service to the Charleston Orphan House. She spent countless hours with children and their families always advocating for what was best for the children. After catching the eye of and eventually marrying the preacher, Rev. Horton, they were blessed with children and grandchildren in their 61 years together. They lived in Mt. Pleasant, Charleston and Rock Hill, SC. Sue was known in Rock Hill for her years of tireless service to HOPE as well as her dedication to Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she served as both deacon, elder and Presbyterian Women Life Member. Sue lived her life as a testament to God's Grace and always reflected God's love and care to everyone she encountered. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made to HOPE or Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730, or donor's choice. The family would like to offer special thanks and gratitude to the nurses and staff at Westminister Health and Rehab and Westminister Towers for their devotion and care during Sue's last days. A memorial service to celebrate Sue's life will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church with Dr. James Simpson and Dr. Mark Verdery officiating. Visitation and a light reception will follow the service in the Activities Center. Burial will be private.
