Sybil Patin Mitchell, age 91, died at her home on Thursday, January 3, 2019 after a brief illness. Sybil was born in New Roads, Louisiana, to Benedict H. and Eugenia (Chustz) Patin. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 67 years Col. Hugh B. Mitchell, Jr., (MD) and brother Eugene J. Patin.
Sybil was a beautiful, lively, social Southern lady who spent much of her married life as the spouse of an Air Force physician and she considered herself as much a service member as her husband. Because of her responsibilities as a military wife and mother of four, she postponed her own education and interests until she was in her 40's when she pursued an associates degree and began to seriously develop her passion for art. After many years of required moves, she and husband "Doc" retired to Fort Mill where she became a well-known watercolor artist and then later expanded her skills in other media. She was a member of the Tega Cay Art League and a signature member of Southern Watercolor and South Carolina Watercolor Societies. Sybil received numerous honors including awards from the Louisiana Watercolor Society, South Carolina Watercolor Society, Museum of York County, Charlotte Art League, Guild of Charlotte Artists and SC State Fair Art Exhibitions. In addition, her work has been chosen for many other juried exhibitions and her paintings have been selected for many regional and local art shows. Sybil's paintings are included in numerous private and public collections including Equitable Life, R. J. Reynolds Industries, Wachovia Bank & Trust, Duke University, Old Stone Corporation, Nations Bank, Bowman-Gray Medical Center, Rock Hill Bank and Trust, Luwa Corporation, First Savings Bank, Planter's National Bank, Branch Banking & Trust, and Macy's. In addition to her skills in art, she was also a excellent seamstress and in her 70's became quite handy with a computer; Sybil never stopped learning and her interests were so varied that she leaves many unfinished projects.
Sybil leaves to treasure her memory: daughter, Allyn Mitchell of Roanoke, VA; sons, Hugh (Sue) Mitchell of Newark, DE, Jeffrey Mitchell of Fort Mill and Christopher (Lynette) Mitchell of Fort Mill. Also surviving are loving granddaughters, Carrie Farhy, Beth Vogel and Kristen Peoples; adoring grandsons, Nate Mitchell and Ian Mitchell; plus 6 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill, SC.
