Walter Chimiak

January 2, 1920 — November 28, 2017

Captain Walter Chimiak USN, (Ret) has gone to his eternal reward on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at the Charlotte Medical Center, Pineville, North Carolina. He was born in Baltimore Maryland, a son of the late Anthony and Anna Chimiak and husband of Wanda K. Chimiak. Captain Chimiak, is a retired Naval Officer of 30 years, and served during WW II aboard the USS Hornet CV 12. After WW II, he was the chief engineer of the Polaris Missile program, then received his MA in Oceanography and served as Assistant Director of Oceanography for the U.S. Navy, until he retired in 1972. He and his wife Wanda have resided in Fort Mill South Carolina until the present.


Survivors include his sons, Reverend Monsignor Karl A. Chimiak, Pastor, St. Joseph Church, Beltsville, MD; Dr. William Chimiak, Chattanooga TN; James Chimiak, MD, Morganton NC; Mark Chimiak, Melbourne FL Daughters are Cynthia Wood, Fort Mill, SC; Kathy Schmugge, Fort Mill, SC; Nancy Frei, Brauenlingen,Germany; Susan Mazzullo, Stevensonville MD. There are 23 grandchildren and one great grandson.


The wake and visitation service will be at the Palmetto Funeral Home, Fort Mill SC, Friday, December 1, 2017. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, December 2, 2017 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 292 Munn Road, Fort Mill SC at 10 am. Private Internment will at the Veteran National Cemetery, Fort Jackson SC the following week.
