Wayne Leon Shafer went peacefully home to be with the Lord on August 26, 2023, after a long illness. Born September 7, 1946, in Charleston, West Virginia, he spent most of his childhood in Clendenin where he was part of the first graduating class of Herbert Hoover High School in 1964. He moved to Washington D.C. shortly after graduating and began his career in the computer industry. At the height of his career, he managed four of the fastest computers in the world. Later in life, he founded JW Contracting, where for the next 15 years he built and remodeled homes all over the tri-state area. One of his many specialties was remodeling homes for the disabled. After retirement, he enjoyed fishing, rebuilding classic cars, riding motorcycles, and spending time with his three granddaughters. Wayne’s generosity to friends and people in need was quiet but heard loudly in the hearts of those he helped.
He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Erdene Shafer, sister Joyce Ann Shafer, brothers-in-law Paul Naylor and Tony Belcher, and nephews Justin Mallett and Wesley Andrews. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Fran, son Wayne (Kiley), daughter Lori, granddaughters Briley, Brinley, and Bristol, siblings Donna Sue Naylor, Blaine Shafer, and Nancy Belcher.
The family would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to Wayne’s dear friend and fishing buddy Joe Smith. Special thank you to Carolyn, Vicki, Shelly, and Brandi for their care and thoughtfulness.
Wayne and Fran have spent the last six months in South Carolina to spend as much time as possible with Lori, Wayne, Kiley, Briley, Brinley, and Bristol.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Wayne’s memory to the Wayne T Patrick Hospice House 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, South Carolina 29732. The family will notify loved ones in the future when a service is scheduled.
