William Harley "Buddy" McCarter, Jr., age 73, died on Monday, July 22, at Carolinas Medical Center following a stroke suffered on July 16. Mr. McCarter is survived by Margaret Sowell McCarter, his wife of 52 years; daughters Deana McCarter Nelson from Chesnee, SC, and Malynda McCarter Williams (Chad) from Rock Hill; grandson, Drew Alewine; granddaughters Maleah Alewine, Kaity Williams and Kally Williams; one great granddaughter, Laila Kowalczyk; two sisters: Dean M. Smith and Mary M. Sanford, both of Rock Hill; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mamie and Harley McCarter, and his son-in-law, Daniel E. Nelson. Buddy was a graduate of Rock Hill High School, where he excelled in golf, track and baseball. He briefly played professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirate organization. He served four years with the United States Navy. For many years Buddy was the sports editor at The Evening Herald newspaper. In 1970, he co-founded the first area Herald football jamboree. He was inducted into the York County Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Following his retirement from The Herald, Buddy worked for Bobby Joe Edwards Enterprises, and later for Drum's Tire. The family will receive friends at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 24, from 6-8pm. A memorial service will be held at Park Baptist Church, 717 E. Main Street, Rock Hill, on Thursday, July 25, at 3:00 p.m., with Pastor Dave Kiehn officiating. Interment will be private.
