William Edward "Eddie" Weldon

William Edward (Eddie) Weldon, of Fort Mill, SC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at the Pearl of Fort Mill.  He was 80 years old.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Unity Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, SC with Reverend Dr. Matthew Rich officiating.  There will be a reception at the church immediately following the service.

Eddie was born in Darlington, SC, and grew up in Hartsville, SC.  Eddie was the son of the late Ariel Kenneth Weldon and Thelma McCutchen Weldon.  After graduating from Hartsville High School in 1961, Eddie earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Erskine College, where he was a member of the Flying Fleet tennis team.  At Erskine, Eddie fell in love with his chemistry partner, Travis Matthews.  They were married in 1964 and remained in Due West for two more years.

In 1966, Eddie and Travis moved to Sumter, SC where Eddie taught school and began his coaching career.  While living in Sumter, Eddie also earned his Masters Degree in Guidance from the University of South Carolina.  GO GAMECOCKS!  Eddie and Travis had two sons in Sumter, Ken and Matt.  In 1980, the family moved to Fort Mill, SC for Eddie to further his coaching career.  At Fort Mill High School, Eddie coached football and golf and served as the athletic director.  Eddie took a break from coaching in 1986 and worked in sales for Universal Systems in Rock Hill.  After just a few short years, Eddie got back into coaching and worked as the golf coach for the Men and Women’s teams at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC.  Eddie’s coaching career ended when he retired from Winthrop in 2006.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Travis Matthews Weldon, two sons, Ariel Kenneth Weldon (“Boo”) and Palmer Matthews Weldon, and two granddaughters Mary Matthews Weldon Zanin (Tradd) and Evelyn Mims Weldon.  He was predeceased by his father and mother, and his two brothers, Ariel Kenneth Weldon, Jr and Eugene Ariel Weldon.
