“John Stuart Murray (“J-Murr”) was adopted by Dr. Claude L. Murray and Lillian Schwartz Murray. He was born in Charleston, SC on June 28th, 1966. John died at 55 years of age in his home in Rock Hill, SC on May 10th, 2022 after a 12 week battle with Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer.
He is survived by his brother; Cliff Murray, his wife of 34 years; Annette Cason Murray, his daughter; Brittany Saunders with spouse Lawson Saunders, his daughter; Casey Vaughn with spouse Shea Vaughn, and his daughter Camryn Murray. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Bryson & Hazel Saunders and Shea & Koda Vaughn, his Mother in Law; Maureen Sawyer, and by his beloved puppies; Lillie and Bair.
John was a lover of all things musical. He was a phenomenal, self-taught drummer with an insatiable thirst for learning and a passion for riding his motorcycle. He was a family man with an unyielding desire to make sure his “girls” and his babies were safe and taken care of.
His yogi tendencies, bottomless patience and genuine kindness shaped him into the humble, servant leader that many people he worked with at Jason’s Deli Distribution and Distribution Technology, Inc. knew and loved. He cherished the people around him and most would say he was a bright spot on even the gloomiest of days. John had a way of walking into the room and either singing a stupid (often made up) song, cracking a silly joke, or fake-slapping everyone in the room that just left a smile on everyone’s face.
John was a cerebral introvert who felt the biggest feelings and thought the deepest, most philosophical thoughts. He was a loner who often disappeared at most get-togethers but once you found him and he “let you in”, you were changed by his sincerity and light.
John’s memorial service will be held on Friday, May 13th, 2022 at Palmetto Funeral Home. Officiated by Pastor Patrick Roddey of Harmony Baptist Church.
“I can worship nature and that fulfills my need for miracles and beauty. Art gives a spiritual depth to existence— I can find worlds bigger and deeper than my own in music, paintings, and books. And from my friends and family I receive the highest benediction, emotional contact, and personal affirmation. I can now before the works of man, from buildings to babies, and that fulfills my need for wonder. I can believe in the sanctity of life, and that becomes the Revealed Word, to live my life as I believe it should be, not as I’m told to by self-appointed guides.” - Neil Peart
